Default Towing Capacity?

I'm tire kicking on a 97/98ish Chevy truck, and I'm trying to figure out the towing capacity of it. its a 4 wheel drive, crew cab 3500 with the 7.4/454.. anyone happen to know the towing capacity of one of these?

I've done some searching around, and the only numbers I've found are like 5k, I don't think there is any way that can be right for a 1ton, so I'm thinking maybe thats for the 1/2 ton or something.

Thanks for the help guys

Well it's way more than 5000 lbs. I spend alot of time around the racetrack and see a bunch of em towing enclosed, dual/triple axle trailers in the 12,000 LBS. range so i'd say the capacity is around 12,500 Lbs maybe more.

Gooseneck / fith wheel that is, reciever hitch capacity is probably around 10,000 Lbs.

A.) Why are you kicking around tires on an old gasser, when you have a late model Dirtymax....??

B.) You're looking at about 8-9mpg towing with that truck.

C.) Depending on where you look, the 'rated' towing capacity is listed anywhere between 8,000lbs and 10,000lbs for 4wd models (on a bumper frame hitch). That said, it wouldn't be much of a stretch to pull 12-13,000 on a bed mounted hitch.

D.) DON'T!!! You have a better truck already.

I'm mostly looking at it because I think I can get it super cheap and ditch the truck payment. and I don't tow a lot, so this would be an easy way to save a fortune every month in a truck payment.

If I didn't already have my truck I would seriously consider that one. don't really need a dually, but the price is pretty good.

Plus it has those impossible to find factory captains chairs.

Big block gas motor was the vehicle to tow with for all the race teams. Until the diesels came along. It'll most likely pull anything you can hook up to it (within reason, don't go pulling a backhoe). It'll do whatever you need pulling a jeep.

Sure it won't be as fast as a diesel, but you'll still get there.

My little Tacoma is rated for 5500 or something which would be hell trying to tow that much.

I vote for that Dodge. Depending on mileage and condition, you cant go wrong with those old 12 valve diesels.
